Chapter 7

Eventually, after turning around and backtracking several times, I finally ended up at the room.

It was the fresh blood underneath the doorway, however—which, let’s remember, was the blood of the Marines Jason had killed to get to me—that told me I was back in the right place. I sidestepped the puddles of crimson and walked into the room.

I looked to the corner where Jason had been. Aside from several small pools of blood scuffed into the floor from his beatdown, there was no sign he’d ever been there.

Well, no other sign except for the overturned stretchers that made every step around the room an adventure.

Apparently, the struggle between Jason and Henry had been a bit more involved than I’d realized and my new guards had given very little consideration to the general state of the room.

I took a deep breath, placed Isaac’s journal and the clothes Henry had given me onto a stainless-steel counter and began quickly throwing the room back together. In my haste, I failed to hear footsteps creeping up behind me.

“Need a hand?”

I nearly jumped through the ceiling before spinning around.

“God dammit, Lynn!” I hissed. “Don’t sneak up on me like that!”

Lynn flashed an amused smile. “Sorry. I just came to see how you were doing.”

I took in several deep breaths to regain control of my heartrate before I responded. “Well, aside from the fact you probably just shaved 10 years off my lifespan, I’m doing just fine, thank you!”

“Oh, don’t be so dramatic,” she said, waving me off. “Maybe next time you’ll pay better attention.”

“Well, maybe next time I’ll return the favor,” I snickered.

Lynn didn’t seem overly concerned. “Good luck with that, civvie.”

“What, no one’s ever snuck up on you before?” I countered sarcastically.

Lynn just looked at me with an expression that was all business. “Not in a very long time. That’s what this place does to you. Hopefully you’ll never have to find that out.”

Ugh.

Normally, I might’ve made some smartass remark. Instead, I decided to concede the point. Honestly, I was growing tired of the constant inferences of danger lurking right around every corner. What I wouldn’t give for just a few moments, without constant reminders of where I was—a few carefree minutes where the tension generated by my surroundings didn’t threaten to swallow me whole.

Seeking to escape the ensuing awkward silence, I went back to turning up the strewn-out stretchers. Lynn did the same. A few seconds later, we had them all turned upright and stacked against the wall, creating something of a lengthy, makeshift couch.

“Are you okay, Isaac?”

The question caught me off guard. Not because there was anything strange about it but because of the unmistakable tone of concern that I could hear in Lynn’s voice.

Up until this moment, Lynn’s dealings with me implied that she considered me as more of a nuisance—one she seemed resigned to, but a nuisance all the same. Small wonder why I just stared dumbly back at her.

“A simple yes or no will do,” Lynn laughed.

“Yes,” I answered, hesitantly.
